About

High performance storage where the media and projects that are in production / post production reside.

At the heart of all storage is a hardware, Smart Raid and filesystem optimized for realtime playback of large files of raw video, uncompressed, UHD and HDR, from multiple creative edit or vfx systems, allowing a collaborative flow.

The sharing technology used for this project was NAS (Network Attached Storage).

Executive summary

Customer shares that it has problems with the production and delivery of commercials, resulting in overtime work and "night turns" to deliver its projects, and that such problems are associated with storage performance and media processing current in place. There is also the objective of expanding the services currently provided, which will include color grading and review&approval process.

Solution overview

Physical installation containing storage, network, LTO tape library for backup and archive is connected to the cloud infrastructure.

Rockit Shared Storage for Media - Xinnor

Workflow

  • Ingest

Using a workstation in the local network, the files are copied into the shared storage via 1Gb or 10Gb network. For higher ingest performance, multiple workstations can be used simultaneously.

Immediately Rockit recognizes the files, generates proxies and uploads the proxies to the mam automatically.

  • Editing, motion, finishing

The local creative seats also have access to MAM database and proxies for search and preview in the same way remote seats do, but because they are on the local network they can work directly on the raw media living in the dedicated shared storage, which is critical in conforming, color grading and vfx processes.

Using the integrated panel in Premiere and AfterFX, editor, assistant and motion graphics artist search directly via metadata and proxies, import the high-res media directly into the bin, perform editing/finishing, then the project is saved in the MAM for collaboration between operators.

  • Backup

Backup and archive solutions share the same hardware, consisting primarily of servers, tape library, and software. Configuration is required for allocation, optimization, and utilization of hardware resources.

The Backup system through a backup plan performs incremental and full backups automatically, keeping all storage content on at least 2 copies of LTO tapes. No user intervention is required.

  • Archive

Archiving happens when the project is finished, although it can be done automatically, a user (e.g media manager) should perform the operation.

By accessing the archive system via browser or desktop application, the media manager selects the files located in the Rockit storage, adds metadata that will be used for future search, and runs the archive.

The archive system scans the files in two steps to ensure that the archive has been successfully performed and optionally already deletes the storage files freeing up space for new productions.
